It’s been more than a year since I last wrote a “snapshot” in May of last year.
So here is me after my first full year in the position!
Last year my goals for the following year were:
- Learn how to completely manage my databases. (Backups, restores, etc)
- Take Exams towards MCSA.
Well I’ve accomplished the first goal, I have a solid understanding of the environment after having upgraded every server from 2005 and 2008R2 to 2012 and 2014.
I’ve gone over each server with the person responsible for that server to determine necessary backups and permissions.
I’ve established a naming scheme for machines and aliases.
I’ve also documented each server, the OS, the instance, the responsible party, the environment, the reason for the server, and the importance.
I feel pretty comfortable with my environment at this time, and have a good idea of where we’re going. Next I’ll be figuring out how to get there.
I haven’t done anything towards obtaining my MCSA sadly. It’s easy to say work got in the way, however it’s more of my time management and motivation! I signed up for a 5k and have been working towards it, perhaps I have to sign up for an exam first and then study to meet the objective!
So here’s to the end of 2014 – my goals for the coming year:
- Run in the #SQLRun 5k at Summit
- Take an Exam at Summit
- Present at a user group
- Create a solid AlwaysOn environment
Keep me on it readers!
